ScientiaMobile Announces New Responsive Website with Server-Side Optimization
New ScientiaMobile website offers an example of responsive web design + WURFL-based server-side optimization
Reston, VA (PRWEB) March 22, 2013
ScientiaMobile, Inc., a US company offering the popular WURFL framework for the detection of mobile devices, has today announced its new company website. The new redesigned site offers a new organization of the company offering, new naming for ScientiaMobile’s portfolio of products for mobile device detection, as well as several new resources for users of WURFL. In addition to this, the new website also represent an example of how WURFL can be used to enhance a company’s website to support a great UX from a variety of browsers and Internet-enabled devices thanks to the combined use of Responsive Web Design (RWD) and Server-Side optimization based on WURFL. The new website is available at http://www.scientiamobile.com .
“A redesign of our site was overdue particularly because we wanted to give our WURFL InFuze products the exposure they deserve. Early during the planning phase we decided that our new site had to work well on desktops, tablets, smartphones, and a long list of legacy mobile devices that exist. This called for the adoption of state-of-the-art approaches to web development. In addition, we were able to show the world that we can eat our own dog food while putting WURFL to the test. This is why we adopted a responsive base and several server-side optimizations which reduced the load on smartphones and legacy devices. WURFL made these optimizations possible. Our new site enjoys all the advantages of a responsive design while supporting devices that a RWD-only solution could not support. Devices like older Blackberries, Symbian, Nokia Series40, Opera Mini or even devices with the Openwave and Netfront browsers with the proper memory capacity can view a functional and attractive version of our site.” – said Luca Passani, CTO at ScientiaMobile.
“Developers who deploy server side optimizations of RWD use the term RESS, or REsponsive design and Server-Side components, to describe this process. This is exactly the approach that we used. In particular, we adopted WURFL Cloud premium to power the server-side adaptation side of the website. The site serves simplified navigation to feature phones and legacy devices. Certain non-crucial parts of the content are removed server-side, so the page loads fast also when accessed on a mobile device through a carrier’s network. The most impressive feature, though, is how we managed the rendering of long tables on mobile phones. This is certainly a nut that generic RWD has not cracked yet, but which the ScientiaMobile team obviously has, as one can see when accessing the long list of WURFL capabilities on the site. The result is obvious: our website looks nice on an incredible array of different devices and browsers.” – said Wesley Almeida, Senior Engineering Manager at ScientiaMobile.
“RWD and server-side optimizations have often been presented as mutually-exclusive options, where one would either go with a responsive website or build a mobile website in addition to the traditional website. The ScientiaMobile website is the live demonstration that this dichotomy is false. WURFL and RWD can go hand in hand at reasonable cost and yet with great control over the user-experience on different browsers and devices.” – said Tim Kadlec, Responsive Web Design expert and author of “Implementing Responsive Design”.
“The main objection I hear to Responsive Web Design is the lack of control of the UX for the long tail of mobile devices out there. ScientiaMobile.com is demonstrating significant improvements in that field. It seems to me that ScientiaMobile has improved on vanilla RWD brilliantly” – said Ken Jones, a marketing professional and founder of Verge International in Chicago.
In addition to the public pages, also the customer vaults and the WURFL Cloud control panels have been made responsive to allow access from all devices.
