Mobile phone technology is constantly evolving. What qualified as a smartphone 4 years ago may look like a museum piece now. Our customers rely on WURFL device detection to curate and define the categories of devices. For this reason, we regularly update our definition of what qualifies as a smartphone.
Smartphone Definition Updates
In the upcoming version of the WURFL API (version 18.104.22.168), we have updated our definition for a smartphone
The key parameters that are changing are:
1. Horizontal Resolution requirements will increase to 540 pixels
2. Minimum OS version requirements will increase to iOS 9, Android 6.0
3. Removal of RIM OS and Windows Phone OS from being considered as Smartphone operating systems
4. Added HarmonyOS
These changes impact less than 2% of smartphones that we identified and analyzed during the first quarter of 2022.
For those looking to identify categories of devices like smartphones, WURFL provides is_smartphone and form_factor (which includes the smartphone form factor) device capabilities.
