Apple iPhone 11 Launch
Apple launched three models in September 2019: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. ScientiaMobile started to track these as soon as they shipped on September 20, 2019. By the end of October, the iPhone 11 was the most used of the three, with 0.81% of global smartphone usage. The iPhone 11 Pro had 0.62% and the iPhone 11 Pro Max had 0.44%.
When comparing launch results to September and October of the previous year for 2018 Apple iPhone models, the 2019 models show approximately double the adoption rate. One reason for the success is that Apple successfully shipped its 2019 premium phone, the iPhone 11 Pro Max. In contrast, Apple had production delays in 2018 that pushed the shipping date of the iPhone XR to late October 2018.
In head-to-head comparisons of 2019 vs. 2018 iPhones, the iPhone 11 has 0.81%, compared to only 0.46% for the iPhone XS. Likewise, the iPhone 11 Pro had 0.62% compared to only 0.40% for the iPhone XS Max.
Detect iPhone 11 with WURFL.js
Apple makes it difficult to detect and distinguish between iPhones using just user-agent analysis. ScientiaMobile offers WURFL.js to address the iPhone detection challenge. By placing a short snippet of JavaScript on your page, WURFL.js performs an additional inspection of the requesting device and can distinguish between models of iPhones and iPads. The WURFL.js Basic, Standard, and Pro editions all return highly accurate detection of iPhones. This information can easily be integrated into website analytics platforms like Google Analytics.
Apple iPhone 7 is Still Most Used Smartphone Globally
At the end of 2019 Q3, the Apple iPhone 7 was still the world’s most used smartphone and most used iPhone based on global smartphone traffic. The iPhone 8 is second most popular iPhone with 4.09%. The iPhone XR grew quickly over the third quarter, finishing with 3.68%. However, both the iPhone XS and XS Max saw a drop during the quarter, most likely as users upgrade to the newest 2019 models.
